The Gem is cheap food at high prices riding the coattails of a historical name. Depending who you ask, it might be exactly the type of thing Swearengen would do, but no doubt he'd shoot these folks for doing it. And then again for soiling his name. A gem it is not.
Terrific steak! All of our food was so delicious, the staff is very friendly. Not much of a gambler but the history in the place is worth reading, great stop awesome food!
If you want the best steak in town head to this place! I will literally drive 7 hours for the parmesan garlic steak! The atmosphere is quiet and mellow, it's always clean, and the wait staff is incredible! Give this place a try and prepare to be amazed! 5 stars all around!
Overall, visit was ok, but the major issue we had was ordered prime rib sandwich (beef). They bring food including the sandwich, never once saying anything about being short on beef for sandwich, but the sandwich tasted"funny and was tough". When we asked about it, the waitress said "we were almost out of beef so we substituted Buffalo". We said what? She said " you should be happy, it's more expensive". We said don't you think you should have asked or at least mentioned it? She said "what's the big deal"? We said it wasn't what we ordered, and we didn't eat it, after some discussion, she did remove it from the bill, but still couldn't understand why we were upset? Not sure that's the best customer service, expected better, suppose to be fine dining in a nice restaurant. Meal took almost thirty minutes from taking order until delivered to table, seemed long for 1:30 in the afternoon. Other food we good but not great. Wouldn't even consider going back.
The food quality here is bad, low quality, air-dropped on third world countries to give to their goats in crisis relief-quality, bad. There is nothing fresh here. Probably only the ice is frozen. I think everything else is canned. Canned peas. Canned beef. I don't know how to make baked potatoes taste bad, but hats off to the Gem for figuring it out.
Best spot in Deadwood! Great food. Didn't jack their prices for the Sturgis rally. Unlike most other spots that we visited. Super great bar service and killer patio overlooking the whole downtown area. Loved this place.
Oooh. Did I? I did. And it's deserved. 1 star. Seems harsh, I know, but I had to eat there. This place is truly offensive. Masquerading as a fancy steakhouse but in reality, it's garbage. Yes, there are steaks on the menu. Rubbery, Alpo-rejected, meat of some type. Kangaroo maybe? Maybe cow. If that cow was a diseased and infirm, old and suffering, invalid cow.
